Johannesburg - The murder of a popular Odendaalsrus minister’s wife has shocked the small community in the Free State.

Johan Knoetze, 66, said when he unlocked the front door on Friday night at about 19:00, he felt an icy cold wind and started calling his wife’s name.

Knoetze found his wife’s shoes, with broken heels, lying in the passage and then saw her body, reported Volksblad.

Annette Knoetze, 64, had been stabbed in the chest and her wrists had been slashed. Knoetze said it looked like she had tried to fight back and reach the panic button.

Annette was popular and well-liked in the community. She was also the mother of three women in prominent legal positions in the Free State and North West.

Her husband was the head of the Afrikaner Church at Allanridge and said she had only recently turned to him in the car and said: “My dear, I love you so much, I hope we die together one day.

“As a Christian I know there where she is now, there is no trouble. She was a dear woman who wouldn’t hurt a fly.”

Police were investigating the murder.
