Johannesburg - A University of Johannesburg professor might be the ninth victim in a series of serial murders of gay men in Gauteng.

Dr Carl Mischke, 47, was found face down on his bed in a pool of blood on Monday morning. His body was covered in multiple stab wounds, reports Eyewitness News.

Police confirmed that the Norwood man’s death would be investigated as part of the hunt for the serial killer or killers.

Police have described the killings as the work of a gang operating in Gauteng and Cape Town.

They say the gang allegedly obtains the trust of their victims who allow them into their homes.

Mischke lived just a few streets away from another victim, Barney van Heerden.

Activists have accused police investigating the murder of incompetence and warned gay men to remain cautious and be wary of who they invite into their homes.
