Johannesburg - Two men, who killed a man they had hijacked as well as a family of three, were sentenced to 18 years in jail by the Potchefstroom Circuit Court, Beeld newspaper reported on Thursday.

Simon Machave, 21, and David Lebesi, 31, hijacked Batimedi Mothupi's Condor near Klerksdorp on January 23 2010. The two were sentenced on Wednesday.

A wild car chase ensued between police and the hijackers, during which the criminals drove the Condor into oncoming traffic, killing Johan and Talita Fourie and their 3-month-old baby son, Tiaan.

Mothupi was flung out of his car, and he was also killed.

Machave, who was seriously injured in the crash, later escaped from hospital in a wheelchair, and was tracked down the following day, 2km away, crawling on his bottom.

Judge John Horn found Machave and Lebesi guilty of aggravated robbery, kidnapping and the illegal possession of a firearm.
