Johannesburg - A student from Potchefstroom University's North West campus is in a critical, but stable condition after falling 12m from the roof of a campus residence, it was reported on Monday.
René Cremer, 19, was on the roof with a group of friends, watching the sun rise on Saturday, Beeld reported.
She stepped onto the door of a hatch and fell about 12m, landing in the residence's entrance hall.
Cremer was rushed to the intensive care unit of the Milpark Hospital, in Johannesburg, where she was being treated for a burst bladder, two pelvic fractures, broken and cracked ribs, a torn kidney, a fractured left arm and a punctured lung.
Her parents, Hennie and Amanda Cremer, of Mossel Bay, said it was a miracle she survived, and they were extremely grateful.
"It's a miracle that her back wasn't injured.... The doctors are going to give her body a chance to recover from the shock before they operate," said her father.
The fall comes two years after René's older brother Andre was left a quadriplegic after a car accident.
