Johannesburg - There has been a rise in the number of vehicles damaged by potholes, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) said on Thursday.

"There had been more reports in the last two weeks about vehicles that were damaged by potholes," spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said.

This was caused by the heavy rain and flooding in the area.

Peters-Scheepers said repairs to roads had started as reports came through.

"Once the rain clears up we will begin to secure the roads properly."

She said the JRA would start repairing the main arterial routes first and then proceed to repair roads region by region.

"Regional teams would be sent out to repair the damages."
