Johannesburg - Trains operating between Pretoria and
Johannesburg have been delayed due to a power failure in Irene, east of
Pretoria, on Monday morning.
The delays were "major" and up to 40 minutes long,
said Metrorail Gauteng spokesperson Lillian Mofokeng.
She said the power failure resulted in signal panel
malfunctioning.
On Sunday, train operations were also affected by cable
damage in Fountains, outside Pretoria.
"Metrorail had expected to run a normal service but the
cable damage and power failure are causing major train delays between Pretoria
and Johannesburg," said Mofokeng.
"We appeal to both commuters and their employers to
exercise patience while the technical teams are working around repairing the
cable and restoring the power..."
Last week, there was a similar power failure in Irene which
caused signal panel failures in Centurion.
