Pregnant woman dies in hit-and-run

2011-11-10 10:03

Johannesburg - A pregnant woman was killed and two other women were critically injured when they were hit by a truck in Mobeni, near Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday morning, paramedics said.

"At 07:40, a heavy goods truck went straight through an intersection on Higginson Highway [outside Clairwood Hospital] and hit three young women on a pedestrian crossing," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

The driver then reversed back over the women before getting out of the truck and running away.

A 20-year-old pregnant woman died on the scene. The other two women were "very critically" injured, Botha said.

Traffic was heavily affected and a large part of the road was closed.

Police would investigate, he said.

I don't know what is happening on our roads. So close to the Christmas season people are acting criminally and with malice ... thank goodness my children won't be on the road and they'll be staying home. I pray for the woman's family and hope they are okay.
