Premier at soccer, rugby games

Johannesburg - Major soccer and rugby games being played in Soweto on Saturday would be attended by Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane in an attempt to promote the province ahead of the World Cup.

"The World Cup sought to unite us all in the name of football and there is no better way to show our ecstasy and conviction...than being in the grand stands to support your team through thick and thin," she said.

"By so doing, we are showing the world that Gauteng cannot wait to offer them an unprecedented World Cup experience."

Mokonyane and the SA Football Supporters Association (SAFSA) would sit in the stands with the public and watch BidVest Wits play Amazulu in the Nedbank Cup final at Soccer City at 15:00, and the Blue Bulls take on the Crusaders in the Super 14 rugby semi-final at Orlando Stadium at 17:00.

Orlando Stadium traditionally hosts soccer matches and this was the first time a rugby match would be held there.
