Premier condemns Muslim man's murder

2012-08-09 12:05

Johannesburg - North West Premier Thandi Modise on Thursday condemned the killing of a Muslim man in Magaliesburg.

“There is no place in our diverse society for those who harbour racism and religious intolerance," she said in a statement.

Modise called on police to ensure those responsible for the death of Muhammad Fayaaz Kazi, 27, were arrested.

The attack was both racist and Islamophobic, she said. She called on residents to help the police in their investigation and to exercise restraint.

Former intelligence minister Ronnie Kasrils said on Wednesday the "savage" attack on Kazi and another Muslim man carried "the stench of Islamophobia".

"My heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the family of Fayaaz Kazi, whose brutal killers must be hunted down and brought to justice," Kasrils said in a statement.

Kazi was beaten to death in Magaliesburg, allegedly by two people who insulted him because of his beard, according to a family friend.

Kazi, from Ventersdorp, and his father's friend Anser Mahmood, were attacked at a Chicken Licken outlet in the town on Monday.

"Two white people... they called him [Osama] bin Laden in Afrikaans because of his beard...and then they called us kaffirs," Mahmood told Sapa by telephone on Wednesday.

"Fayaaz, he understood Afrikaans, and was arguing with them."

All four were thrown out of the fast food shop, and the fight continued outside.

"I asked why they were troubling him and he punched me," Mahmood, 33, said.

"I don't know what he hit me with. I was unconscious."

Mahmood was mostly hit in the face, while Kazi was beaten over the head. Mahmood said he did not know what object was used to attack Kazi.

"Nobody helps us. They wanted me dead also, but I survived."

North West police said a murder docket had been opened.

"After purchasing food from a fast food outlet an argument allegedly broke out between Kazi and two unknown Afrikaner males. It further alleged that the two suspects were mocking Kazi about his long beard," said Brigadier Thulani Ngubane.

The two men fled the scene after the assault.

Ngubane said Mahmood refused to open a case and the two left for Ventersdorp.

"Upon arriving on Ventersdop, Kazi became weak and was transported to the Ventersdorp Hospital where he was treated and transferred to Potchefstroom Hospital after his condition became worse," Ngubane said.

Kazi died in hospital at Potchefstroom. His funeral was held on Tuesday.

The murder case was registered at the Potchefstroom police station. It was expected to be transferred to the Magaliesburg police.

The Media Review Network, a Muslim advocacy group on human rights, called on Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa to ensure a speedy investigation.

Researcher Ibrahim Vawda said there was widespread anger across the Muslim community.

"We strongly urge all members of our community to exercise restraint and patience and to allow the normal process of the law to take its course."

Bin Laden was the founder of al-Qaeda, which the US claimed was responsible for the September 11, 2001, suicide attacks on the country. US soldiers killed him in Pakistan on May 2, 2011.

Absolutely this rascist killing reminds us of the past days were people were hated and tortured simply because they were different, The beard of this our brother was the only thing that made him to hated and killed.Killling a person simply because he has beard is wrong and should be condemned with highest and strongest possible terms , the culprits should be found and be handed over to the community for a fair justice system.

@Michael,We have never denied you and your kind any independence; in fact we gave you Orania and even allowed you to have your own Currency in Orania and guess what the people of Orania, and you have amounted to nothing with your Orania, this again proves that without the strength of the African man who is the one who constructed Mzantsi you all are nothing, it was the strength of the African slave that build south Africa, and the bullies even today are sitting in theirs bakkies while the African man works hard.

People need to accept that we all will not share the same views, opinions and beliefs, acceptance and respect of one another is key to unity and peace.

As Voltaire once said: I dissaprove of what you say but, i will defend to the death your right to say it. Our only hope at nation building is acceptance of our diversity.

      isolatedexplosion - 2012-08-10 06:59

the problem however is how many people will make the effort to tolerate the differences we as people have

Why? SA muslims are the most loving and best natured people I've ever encountered... Another senseless act of unprovoked attacked by backwards afrikaners full of brandy

Hurt people, hurt people. 2 deaths and all people can speak about is race. South Africans need healing and really soon before a more obvious mass genocide breaks out in our country. APARTHEID IS ALIVE & WELL IN THE MINDS OF ALL SOUTH AFRICANS. We need to be the equal and opposite force against its legacy. Defending a race is RACIST. What about our common humanity we sell with Ubuntu and other tokenism like rainbow nation. Enough empty words,EACH OF US NEED TO HEAL our MINDS from this racist legacy that obviously is alive and well in all of us. It was Ghandi that said "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind" and it seems from these conversations below that BLINDNESS is where we are heading. I am sad and want to see all murders brought to book and solved irrespective of the so-called race of the person.

Whoever one is are whatever nationality, colour , race, looks, whatever- I agree that the challenge we face is that most people have not renewed their minds nor have hearts been softened. Our world is a broken and wounded one. Like you Mr Jansen I want justice to prevail irrespective of colour class creed. Father forgive them.......

Momma I am hiding from the police. Why my son?! Because I killed a man. Why my son?! Because he had a beard? Son, did you say a beard? If your child kills another human being because of something as mundane as clumps of hair, then you as a parent have failed. Absurdities like this would not happen if parents raised their children properly. Too many of you parents out there fail to raise your kids properly. Many of your children have no impulse control, no manners and no respect for others. Some of you even pass on your prejudices onto them. Anyone who doubts this just visit your local mall on any weekday and you will understand what I mean. No impulse control, no manners and no respect ... a danger to society.

I would love to hear the Media Review Network's condemnation of Boko Haram's killing spree against Christians in Nigeria, for no reason other than the fact they are Christians.

  • luvo.luvos - 2012-08-09 16:15

This can be attributed to the notion that being born white makes one a superior human being and has all the rights to look down upon other people. This is the one battle we'll never win, EVER, this psyche is firmly embedded on white people.

      bernard.ingram - 2012-08-09 17:32

You are a first class idiot. Everyone is born equal. What separates us is how you develop as a human being. Sadly, in your case you lack development by a hundred years.

      rorisang.m.motaung - 2012-08-10 00:03

we can only win this battle my african brother by putting PAC on power the u will c who is running this country

The savage and constant attacks on white farmers carries the stench of racistophobia.

  • aphiwe.mayola - 2012-08-09 19:22

This was so unnecessary hey, very sad! But I wish we could move away from certain groups always trying 2 victimize themselves, always bringing up stuff that is irrelevant in this instance. Many ppl have been very sympathetic 2 the farm attacks n brutality, many ppl have been sympathetic 2wards rape victims n the trauma's they go thru, many have been sympathetic 2wards xenophobia victims so now all of a sudden when the Premier shows compassion 4 a Islamphobia ppl wanna blast her n talk smack! If intolerance, in other instances, had been condemned earlier then perhaps we would not have had 2 face many of the things we are faced with now. Stop bringing up what u think deserves more attention n appreciate that this lady is trying 2 stop sumin that cud get outa hand. No1 is better than any1 btw, finish n klaar!

      ffkemp - 2012-08-10 05:38

      Well said! My sentiments exactly!

From the comments it is clear that we as nation are still somewhat divided even though our ancestors who were of many colors, cultures and religions fought hard to liberate us not only from the oppression that existed but also from the damage the separation did to our minds...clearly we have not yet been able to move on from latter. commenters seem to attribute color as being one of the major factors of not being able to find a job but never once did they mention that in could be because of the current state of the economy not only in South Africa but on a world wide scale. Murder, rape and other crimes are condemned in our country so anyone who feels otherwise is speaking utter nonsense and must remember not every case is taken to the media not every community makes a hard enough effort for their voices to be heard etc for instance take the liegh matthews incident one could argue that the murders of women of color don't get as much attention or police effort because their not white but that's not the case there were different factors that caused that case to reach media and start a national manhunt. So to me I am glad that this incident of religious and racial abuse has made national headlines, so we as a nation can condemn as the article said any threat to the diversity our ancestors fought hard to achieve. Any person regardless of color who is guilty intolerance does not deserve a place in our diverse nation. May God give his family the justice they deserve

I hope they are caught locked up and rot in jail, but on my mind is a twelve year old boy probably screaming and begging for his life thrown into a bath of boiling water and boiled to death. That child was also innocent of any crime as were his parents.

Peace to All. As Salaamu Alaykoem. Why should we all let two ignorant people lead the way we think and feel? If we are wise and knowledgeable then the are only a few definite (and common) agreeable facts. 1. Muslims who kill non-muslims should be held accountable and condemned by all, muslims first. 2. Blacks who kill white farmers should be held accountable and condemned by all, blacks first. 3. White who kill non-whites should be held accountable and condemned by all, whites first. Let us not stoop to their level, we are better and we should all start standing together against these actions, law abiding citizens standing up against criminals, honest people against fraudsters, peace-loving people against racists, and may our creator give us the strength to do so.

  • cassblack - 2012-08-10 11:36

This is the Quran that teaches muslims how to live, not oppressions angainst woman nor hatred towards others. Know that the muslims that are terrorists are just that, Terrorists, Not Muslim Terrorists. O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of God is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And God has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things). From The Holy Quran.
