Johannesburg - The country should prepare for at least one more cold snap before saying goodbye to winter, the SA Weather Service warned on Monday.

A cold front that struck on Monday, means "the whole country will be chilly" on Tuesday, forecaster Vanetia Phakula said, so South Africans shouldn’t pack away their winter wardrobes just yet.

It would be very cold over the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, the Free State, and southern parts of the North West.

"Very cold" conditions were defined as maximum temperatures of 10°C or below.

The Western Cape, Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal had a high probability of rainfall.

Snow was predicted over parts of these provinces and the southern Free State. The rest of the Free State had a small chance of light snowfall.

Isolated rain and thundershowers were possible over the Free State, Mpumalanga and Gauteng.

Rainfall predicted for Johannesburg overnight had failed to materialise by Monday morning, and the chances were "slim" that the dry winter spell would be broken in southern Gauteng this week.

Phakula said the patterns of cold and wet weather over the country were not unusual just before the end of winter.
