Presidency spends 'nearly R18m on catering'

2012-10-20 16:08

Johannesburg - The presidency has spent R17.9m in catering over the past five years, the Saturday Star reported.

According to the paper, the figures were presented by Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation Collins Chabane, when responding to a parliamentary question.

He was quoted as saying: "The presidency hosted a number of events and activities that required catering and entertainment, including functions, meetings, cabinet lekgotlas, official state visits, cluster meetings, ministerial meetings, national orders ceremonies and hospitality of a similar nature for high-ranking officials within the presidency."

The paper stated that the presidency's spending was however at its lowest this year in comparison to the past five years.

In 2007/8, about R4.1m was spent on catering and R118 220 on entertainment/ In the 2011/12 financial year, R2.7m was spent in catering and R77 698 on entertaining."

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has however slammed the presidency and President Jacob Zuma for their spending habits.

DA spokesperson on the presidency Joe McGluwa said he would write to Zuma and urge him to "freeze the presidency's spending on luxuries such as catering and entertainment", he told the paper.

Zuma has learned the art of corruption from his Nigerian counterparts though he is still an amateur when compared to them. The Nigerian President Badluck Jonathan spends N1 billion Naira per year on food which translates to R55 million per year. Nigerian Senators (otherwise known as MPs in SA) are the world most paid "parliamentarians" individually earning a minimum of $1.8 million per year.I guess oil money is more abundant than tax payer's money. Can you just imagine if a leader like Helen Zille was in charge of Nigeria with all those resources and wealth at her disposal? Can you imagine how she will greatly improve the infrastructure of the country in every sector? Can you imagine how she will rebuild the nation in such a manner that Nigerians won't want to migrate overseas? Can you imagine how she will promote the country's big brains so that they do not get snatched up by foreign firms? Oh well,i can dream ,can't i? *sighs* Africa where art though???

that is five years do you want the presidency to order mcfries for heads of states, kings and queens and members of the diplomatis corps...it's tough to be at the top president....you are not the only one as i speak there are hundreds of thousands of demonstrators in the streets of London waving nasty flags against David Cameron

      lownabester - 2012-10-20 16:31

The auditor-general’s annual report consistently shows Democratic Alliance (DA)-led administrations to be a cut above the rest in administration and service delivery.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-10-20 17:29

Bongani, ""that is five years, do you want the presidency to order mcfries for heads of states, kings and queens and members of the diplomatis corps."" So true, it is not a lot of money at all, but all this anti Zuma brigade can think of, that this is just catering for Zuma and his family, While in fact, he and his family might only be responsible of a tiny fraction of this anount. What would be far more interesting, is to find out WHO are the ultimate owners of 'news24.com, and what vested political interest do they have. There is something very 'fishy' with a news side , who 'continiously' has articles that are soooo anti our President, and hardly any in his favour, and so close to elections !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      lacrimose.wolf - 2012-10-20 17:59

R3.6m a year just for The Presidency. In case Heads of State, Kings and Queens haven't noticed, food is very expensive the world over. Why should they munch like hungry caterpillars through R3.6m of food whilst so many in the world have to eat off rubbish dumps?

      Soet.Engeltjie - 2012-10-20 18:01

Bongani, nothing wrong with pap, vleis & gravy! Why must they eat caviar etc, while others are starving to death from hunger?

      dave.e.richman - 2012-10-20 18:31

Erm, Bongani..... Perhaps reading isn't your strong suit, but the folks in London are protesting AGAINST cuts in government spending..... is that simple enough language to get through? Surely even the ANC could grasp the concept of CUTTING government spending?

      Desilusionada - 2012-10-20 18:59

Bongani, Are you going to delete this post again? If so well unfortunately the record of your lack of thinking will stay. The pattern is clear. Move the costs of spending to different budgets.. So, heads of states, kings and queens and members of the diplomatis corps. (sic) At R300/plate (Which is rich), this means that he has feasted 60 000 people in 5 years. 12 000/year? Which Heads of states/king and queens were these? At 100 people at a time he would have had 120 such events a year! Once every 3 days? Duh........ On 2nd thoughts though, maybe that is why the country is in such a shambles and why he has no time to be a president. All these heads of state, kings and queens taking his time......

When that happens, open a company with African name and those Tenders will start rolling in. If very easy for you as a White person to go on Top compared a black person given the fact that ANC has very few White members. \r\n\r\nIf you are black, you gonna have to go on Top via another route my friend.. Join a White dominated party, talk alot, be active.. Eventually you will be elected into a higher posts. When that happends, switch to the ANC with that STATUS attached. You are guaranteed a position within the ruling party. Open your company too and the rest will be history

You might have hit the nail on the head there Ndlovu...it is common practice with in African administrations...there is a lot of indigenous catering and events management companies emerging and tenders for functions and events by government are awarded to these not by merit but by the fact that they have a relative or a friend within. It would be interesting to look at what they charge government for their services...certainly not competitive rates judging by the R18 million government has forked out already!

Today nobody sits in a board room and debates or discusses anything, it always has to be a huge conference or indaba, with the food and drink is never ending. We have heard how they actually stuff food in their pockets. In days gone by, these type of conferences and board room meetings the people only had water, unless it was a long affair wherein a few sandwiches and tea or coffee was serviced.

Well, a Zuma, Mandela and a Sisulu offspring trio managed to eat up a mine, surely it runs in the family.. Pigs! May their fat fry for all eternity in hell which is their destiny.

The fat cats know how to waste money. How the poor people would have loved some of that food.

This is what you get for electing a clueless moron to run the country, just spend as much as you can Mr President

They say obesity is a big problem in this country starting with ther government. Let them donate money for the poor and do without all their lavish partying. Why don't they help the poor they are the poor fools who vote them into power anyway!

That's why I never miss the opening of parliament. It's hilarious to watch these incompetent barrels roll down the red carpet as most of them are too obese to even walk.

  • alwyn.vantonder - 2012-10-20 18:58

NO, leave him and his fat family to eat until they explode.. hopefully he will choke on a chickenbone while stuffing those shiny cheeks on that ratface of his! They should take a hungry man off the streets while they're confronting fat Zuma in parliament.. then they should ask the poor man how much money he's spend on food during they year.. Then Zuma should explain to the poor man why he's blown R18 million smackeroos on his stuffed family.. Let Zuma explain! Zero Tolerance for the corrupt Zuma!

Wow so much anger and hatrid. I bet when the whites were taking our land and violating our human rights u weren't so angry then.\r\n\r\nThe kind of people the president of any nation eats with, eat quality food from the very top. Even Botha and de Klerk ate expensive catering. \It comes with the job\
