Pretoria jogger killed in hit-and-run

2012-07-03 09:15

Johannesburg - A Pretoria grandfather was killed in a hit-and-run accident while he was out jogging.

Jan Vreken, 73, who had completed the Comrades 25 times, had been running along Stormvoël Road for almost 30 years.

He went jogging at 06:00 on Saturday morning and when he didn’t come back, his wife became worried and phoned the police, Beeld reported.

She was told of the accident and rushed to the Steve Biko hospital but Vreken had already died.

Vreken’s son, Jan Hendrik, 38, described his father as a “legend and amazing” and said they would “miss him terribly”.

One of his running buddies and fellow member of the Agapé club said in a letter: “We have lost our running daddy.”

“…He was a jogging mentor and dear friend, always full of wisdom and humour, who looked back with gratitude on his blessings and faithfully trusted in God to tell him when to stop running.

“We say goodbye to a running legend”.

Vreken left a wife, 3 children and 7 grandchildren.

its unfortunate. no person should die like that> on that other hand he died doing what he loved most, i think that should be a comforting thought.

Running - twit!!! The driver of that vehicle should drive themselves into a solid concrete block! Accidents happen, but, face up to them, dont run off like a little sissy!

      Taxi driver no doubt..

May his soul rest in peace and the person who hit him have nightmares until he has no where else to run but the police station and confess. Is painful really, my father left home healthy 24 years ago to go to work and was hit by a car and died. This is so painful especially when a person was so healthy. May his family be comforted, he is resting with the Lord.

25 Comrade Marathons what a achievement.I have been running Comrades for the last 30 years with my mouth but never got so far to take the first step and years is passing by with age. RIP there are hundreds of thousands out there that would dream of your achievements

the irony here is that if the driver had stayed, he would've called for help and most likely have saved this dudes life. but he fled the scene, which given the hour this must've happened means he was probably under the influence. Jan I hope you rest in peace.

Jan was a friend to many on the road and always had words of encouragement for anyone who was struggling. He would never have hurt anyone. What a sad day!

  • phobians.marathon - 2012-07-03 19:29

How sad that the death of a very special man should be turned into another opportunity for people to take racial stabs at one another. Comrades symbolises all that is good in people and it is awful to read some of the comments. On the day it is run people from all walks of life come together to achieve a great human feat. His family would be heartbroken read what is being said here because Jan was a kind, loving soul who got on with everyone. Set aside your differences and let his friends mourn with dignity.
