Pretoria man kills lover, self

Johannesburg - A Pretoria man shot dead his girlfriend before committing suicide after an argument in Orchards, north of Pretoria, police said on Monday.

"The man shot his girlfriend in the back of her head in the neighbour's bathroom on Saturday afternoon, before he shot himself," said Constable Maanda Singo.

"She was running away from her house to get away from him, but he followed her. She died at the scene and he died on the way to Steve Biko Academic Hospital."

The 41-year-old mother of one, Freda Refilwe Kobo, wanted Donald Mahlangu to move out of her house after a relationship between the two ended, Singo said.

"According to eyewitnesses, the gun went off five times. I cannot confirm that now as investigations are continuing."

Singo said police had responded to a domestic violence call on Friday night.

Kobo was the communications manager at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital

The National Press Club sent condolences to Kobo's family and friends.

"It is with great sadness that we've learned about the death of one of our loyal press club members," deputy chairperson Jos Charle said in a statement.

"On behalf of the club we sympathise with her son, other family, friends and colleagues. You are in our thoughts."

Police had opened an inquest docket and a murder case, said Singo.
