Johannesburg - Six people are in a serious condition after two trains collided in Pretoria on Thursday morning, emergency services say.

Twenty people were seriously injured in the crash and 150 people sustained "walking" injuries, emergency spokesperson Johan Pieterse told Sapa.

The train driver was among those critically injured and was airlifted to a nearby hospital at 09:00.

"The patients are going to any hospital that can conceivably take patients at the moment," Netcare 911’s spokesperson Chris Botha told News24.

"[Rescue operations] are going to take quite a while."

Police at the scene said one of the trains was stopped on the railway line between Cor Delfos and Saulsville when it was rammed from behind by another.

Power lines on top of the trains were damaged.

Earlier, Pieterse said the railway line between Cor Delfos and Saulsville had been completely shut down because of the accident.
