Pretoria - Train services in Pretoria were disrupted on Thursday morning after overhead cables were damaged, Metrorail said.

"Metrorail's train service has been severely affected due to the panto hook-up between Queenswood and Koedoespoort Stations [in Pretoria]," spokesperson Tony Games said.

A panto hook-up or pantograph incident is when a train's overhead contact equipment has damaged overhead wiring, which causes a power failure in that section.

"The panto hook-up happened at around 04:50 which resulted in overhead wires [being] broken and making it impossible for Metrorail to run a train service from Hercules to Koedoespoort," said Games.

"All trains from Mabopane to Eerste Fabrieke are rerouted to go via Rissik Station and a bus shuttle service will be introduced to transport commuters between Hercules and Koedoespoort with minor delays expected."

Metrorail said a technical team was working to repair the damaged cables and restore the service.

"An appeal is extended to commuters to seek alternative transport arrangements where possible. Metrorail sincerely apologises to all its customers for the inconvenience caused by this unfortunate incident," said Games.
