Johannesburg - The decision to bring the case of South African journalist Gadija Davids' alleged detention in Israel to the NPA was a publicity stunt, the SA Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) said on Thursday.

"The decision constitutes yet another noisy publicity stunt by those dedicated to demonising Israel at every possible opportunity," the organisation said in a statement.

The National Prosecuting Authority's priority crimes litigation unit was investigating the detention of Davids in Israel after she was removed from a ship carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza in 2010.

Israeli authorities allegedly subjected Davids to "inhumane treatment".

She was handcuffed with plastic cable ties and left to sit in the sun for hours. She was held in an Israeli prison and denied consular assistance.

The board was confident local authorities would not allow the incident to be politicised and abused by anti-Israel groups.

"The SAJBD deplores the fact that these groups are willing to tie our legal system up in pointless and time-consuming, baseless litigation in order to further their own selfish and bigoted agenda."
