Johannesburg - Repairs to a substation in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, are 75% complete, the Ekurhuleni metro municipality said on Sunday.

"We are very happy that the work at the substation is within schedule.," spokesperson Themba Gadebe said in a statement.

Several areas of Kempton Park have been without the power supply since around 02:00 on Friday, when the Aston Manor substation exploded, possibly due to a cable fault.

"What remains at this stage is the commissioning and testing of all equipment."

Panels and cables were successfully installed at the damaged power station on Sunday.

Affected areas included Aston Manor, Nimrod Park, Bonaero Park, and parts of Pomona and Glen Marais.
