Johannesburg - Deputy international relations minister Ebrahim Ebrahim told South Africans living in Australia to promote their home country, the department said on Saturday.

"He [Ebrahim] encouraged them to contribute to the economic growth of the country through economic opportunities that exist and also to positively market SA," international relations spokesperson Clayson Monyela said in a statement.

Ebrahim met with the ex-pat community during a visit to Australia where he attended a council meeting of ministers belonging to the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).

During Friday's meeting in Perth, Ebrahim announced that South Africa was keen to be vice chair of the organisation in 2015, leading to it assuming the chair in 2017 to 2019.

One of the key concerns of IORA is to ensure maritime safety, by fighting against piracy and threats to commercial fisheries activities.

According to Monyela, approximately 80% of the world's seaborne oil trade transits through the Indian Ocean.

He said this put South Africa, with its shorelines, in a good vantage point along this trade route.
