Protest in Bronkhorstspruit

Residents in Bronkhorstspruit have been protesting over poor public service delivery.

Cape Town - Protest action has led to a road near Sir Lowry's Pass Village near Somerset West in the Western Cape being closed, it was reported on Thursday morning.

Protesters took to the streets on Thursday morning but Eyewitness News said it was unclear what they were demonstrating about.

Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said the road going from the N2 highway towards the village had been closed but the highway itself was open to traffic.

Meanwhile the situation in Bronkhorstspruit remains tense. A marathon that had been planned for Saturday in the area has been cancelled.

A local high school also informed parents that there would be no teaching on Thursday due to the protest violence.

Various buildings in the area, including a clinic, library and a resident’s house have been torched.

The protesters are demanding improved service delivery.
