Cape Town - About 100 people blockaded a portion of the N1 highway in Touws River on Monday morning to protest against poor service delivery, Western Cape police said.

Warrant Officer November Filander said the highway was closed at Touws River because of burning tyres and cement blocks on the road.

He said the group had been protesting since 05:00 over housing.

Motorists from Laingsburg and Cape Town were asked to use alternative routes.

Police were monitoring the protest.
