WSU protester falls through skylight, dies

2012-02-27 16:35

Johannesburg - A 20-year-old student fell to his death at the Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha on Monday after violence erupted on the campus, Eastern Cape police said.

"He was on the roof of a campus building with many other students," said Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela.

"Some of them were throwing stones at police."

The student apparently stepped on a plastic skylight and fell through.

He was from Bizana and studying a course in the education field. Thirteen other students were arrested for public violence.

Earlier, police said protesting students blockaded roads with rubbish bins, iron rods and other items.

"They were extremely violent. They damaged property, burnt tyres and papers, and threw stones at police and other people."

Police vehicles were damaged, but no injuries were reported. Police fired rubber bullets at the crowd to try and disperse it.

About 1 000 students had been protesting since 6am on the Nelson Mandela Drive campus. Fatyela said students were demanding passes even though they had failed their tests.

The crowd began dispersing after 15:40.

  • Pieter890 - 2012-02-27 17:07

Don't the students realise they are making their University look so pathetic in the media that it might just render their qualification almost useless... You can protest and state your argument, but at least do it half decently!

      snylo - 2012-02-27 17:28

  • Siphiwo - 2012-02-27 17:12

Fellow countrymen, I see disturbing comments here on the death of a student. I agree the ' demands to pass', is not the way to go. You cannot demand to pass even though you failed if the assertion by the writers is anything to go by here. I believe, we must comment with dignity here, this is death and we must respect that, no matter how we feel. Let us show maturity in our comments at all times.

      Joan - 2012-02-27 17:27

You are right Siphiwo - but those who make inappropriate and cruel comments will be rewarded - what goes around comes around and no one is exempt from the laws of karma.

      Vernon - 2012-02-27 18:01

very sad to see these sick and obviously racist comments. Do not agree with the students behaviour but then lets face it a nation that does lead its people from the top will experience this kind of behaviour. I feel deeply saddened for his family and the moral character of our nation.

      mike.clery - 2012-02-27 21:06

@Vernon - the death of the student is tragic, but you would have got these sorts of comments from anywhere in the world under the same circumstances. It IS Darwin award stuff and has nothing to do with racism.

      mike.clery - 2012-02-27 23:51

@Sipho Jimmy Mvukuzo. You may be right about the racist comments - I tend to skip over them because they contribute nothing constructive and are usually from the same people. (I need to add that no one group has a monopoly on racist comments - they come from across the spectrum). And I agree that it's wrong to laugh about the death of someone, specially someone so young. The point I was making is that the majority of comments are what you could expect to see on the Internet if this had happened anywhere in the world, and by far the majority of them make no reference to race at all, not even by inference, so it's wrong to regard them as racial slurs.

      John - 2012-02-28 00:21

Yes Siphiwo... Its a death and its unfortunate. It was not his demand to pass that did him in, but his behavior. My taxes went towards his education, and the skylight. When you go dancing on a skylight and see your ass..... I'm gonna laugh at your stupidity. @ Joan... I guess the failure who danced on the skylight was not exempt from the "laws of karma" either...

      Michelle - 2012-02-28 08:48

Siphiwo - do you for one minute think this student would have had an iota of remorse if a stone he threw hit and killed someone? NO however, yes it is cruel to make fun of his death

Are you plain stupid or just provoking the rest of us? You better start a war against stupidity and primitivism.

      Thys - 2012-02-28 11:47

Thabiso !!!! What War?!!! The war on having to actually pay and work for that which you want. We (as in every other nation in the whole world over the course of 2000 years) had a good system where YOU EARN WHAT YOU HAVE. If you want something that you can't afford or earn, work harder. South Africa is the only country in the WORLD where corrective action, favours both the RULING PARTY, and THE MAJORITY. YOUR MENTALITY actually SHOCKS ME!!!

  • Bibi - 2012-02-27 17:24

How can you demand a pass if you failed? Do they want to become qualified teachers/engineers/accountants/doctors with a no pass? To enter any profession guys, you unfortunately have to work hard (aim for more tha 30% in matric)and in univetsity you have to work even harder. And on top of that destroy and vandalise buildings that are being maintained and paid for by tax payer's money. This really gives the youth a bad name - a deserved one. Is this what the Malema followers look like.

      Koos - 2012-02-27 17:39

My question... how then hell do you fail? 30%.... gee! You must be as dumb as a rock to fail at that!

      Heibrin - 2012-02-28 01:15

@Bibi: no, this is what the results of the 'We demand' culture looks like. No wonder our kids come out of school knowing nothing.

  • Lwando Zondwa-Ziintshaba Poni - 2012-02-27 17:26

No, they were all protesting for various reasons, some wanted a chance to write an auto supp, which is a WSU regulation that if someone is left with only one module they are given a chance to rewrite -supp. For some reason they are refused to do so. Others were excluded even though everyone was said to have been allowed to register owing or not. But apparently some were not allowed. There are residences that were not opened up to be occupied and thus students from other provinces became homeless - so to say thus frustration. The cop is telling a half truth. Nonetheless, this is very bad for our University, one more year and I'm out. I was really hoping this new Administrator would be able to change things around for us 'cause Balintulo was a douche...
