Durban - Forty-five people appeared in the Umbumbulu Magistrate's Court on Tuesday after protesting against a taxi fare increase, police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge said 17 people were released on a warning and 28 were granted bail of R500 each.

"The community was protesting about an increase in taxi fares. The situation is under control and being monitored by police," Mdunge said.

The case was postponed until June 29.

Residents of Umbumbulu, south of Durban, threw stones at motorists driving along the R603 on Tuesday morning.

On Monday, police had to remove barricades, stones and tyres from the road after a group of people gathered around 06:00.

Mdunge said police were keeping watch in Umbumbulu.
