Daveyton residents block streets, burn tyres

Police are trying to contain a protest by Daveyton residents on the East Rand of Johannesburg. Residents burned tyres and blocked roads after police stopped them from moving onto a piece of land earmarked for another community.WATCH

Johannesburg - Protesters of the Lehae area in the south of Johannesburg outside Lenasia on Tuesday blockaded the Golden Highway with rocks, said the metro police department.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the road was inaccessible to motorists.

"They should rather use the N1 or the K43 as alternative routes," he said.

The protest started before 05:00. It was not immediately clear what it was about.

Police officers were on the scene, said Minnaar.
