Johannesburg - A building belonging to Transnet was burned by protesters in Gugulethu on the East Rand, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

Police were investigating a case of arson after the building was set alight on Monday night, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

Forty-six people have been arrested for public violence.

Dlamini said residents of the informal settlement blocked the streets with burning tyres and rocks on Monday.

"Several vehicles were reported to have been stoned but there were no injuries reported," he said.

Dlamini said he was not aware of the motive for the protest.

"No incidents of violence have been reported this morning," he said.
