Protesters 'burst in' to UFS campus

2011-08-17 15:01

Cape Town - An illegal protest was staged in front of the main building at the University of the Free State’s Bloemfontein campus on Wednesday.

However, Sapa reported the SA Students Congress’s Manyene Lesapo as saying that it was students who were protesting.

The group was apparently demanding the removal of rector Jonathan Jansen.

"He has burned political structures on campus," said Lesapo, the chairperson of Sasco.

Details of march on Facebook page

Lesapo said they were unhappy with the upcoming SRC election that was due to take place at the end of the month. He said there was no political activity allowed on campus.

This year candidates for the SRC will go through a selection process and they would stand alone for a position on the SRC. These candidates are allowed no backing from political formations.

The UFS posted details of the illegal march on its Facebook page.

Students gathered in front of the main building and emptied rubbish bins.

Police and security were on the scene.

By 13:40, the crowd began dispersing.

What is it about rubbish bins that anyone who decides to strike has a problem with these bins. Are they trying to tell us something?yes they are, they are trash that need to be removed from campus. They are probably there because of pressure for quotas not for their brain function.

      frangelico - 2011-08-17 15:20

forgot to add all those that have a problem with trash bins and trashing all in sight, says much for your trashy mentality.

We need more people like Jonathan Jansen.

  • Smaal - 2011-08-17 15:39

Maybe someone should tell them that universities are for studying! They can play in the trash at home!

  • Albo - 2011-08-17 15:45

Identify them and expell them - easy as that!! That`s what happened in the past.

      Belisarius - 2011-08-17 15:54

These weren't students from the UFS campus. No one knows where they came from or who they are, but they arrived here in buses. I think they are a hired crowd by SASCO who isn't happy about the fact that students have to stand for election on their own merits and can't rely on backing from political party youth movements.

      boomdrukkerkie - 2011-08-17 18:10

They came from Kroonstad! Aparntly they wer brought by SASCO

  • ktheron2 - 2011-08-17 16:35

Standard operating procedure when striking/protesting: trash it, burn it, loot it, break it, assault it. They don't seem to have a civilized way in which to protest.

  • Elouise - 2011-08-17 16:42

    Jansen for president!!!

The hate and greed of people in this world is truely disgusting - seems the only thing people live for is the persuit of self gratification and to hell with everyone else. The Human Race can go... for all I care. Finish and klaar!

We would have sorted them out in our day. Not nice swimming in those fountains in winter - especially if you don't come up for air too often.

  • Sode - 2011-08-17 17:43

We'll forever be protesting the same things. Some of you here start your comments so nice, but it never takes long for the racial things to creep into your comments. It's people like you AND the protestors who are keeping this country in the dark ages.

  • Maxwell Sokhela - 2011-08-17 18:45

Prof Jansen had no choice but to ban politics from UFS because of strikes like these. I say we should be grateful that SRC elections are still going ahead. Besides I wouldn't like an SRC where they recieve influence from political parties. I want a SRC that are students and that they actually listen to the issues and not those jokes at parliament.

      Mark - 2011-08-18 00:36

      Well Said.

      KrayZee - 2011-08-18 07:37

Please stand for an SRC position, Maxwell.

  • deemer - 2011-08-18 19:28

education FIRST and until we attend the same classes we can talk then about transformation, for now let us just continue playing around with the term.

  • OZNOB - 2011-08-19 08:07

THE STUDENTS ARE THERE TO STUDY NOT TO RIOT - I SAY HAVE THEM AREESTED AND CHAGED AND THE CHERRY ON TOP IS TO HAVE THEM EXPELLED SO THEY CAN TAKE THEIR NONSENSE ELSEWHERE.ALSO THE VARSITY HAS NO NEED OF THOSE STUDENTS WHO SEE THAT STUDYING AT VARSITY AS A RIGHT NOT A PRIVILEGE AND GO OUT THEIR WAY TO DISRUPT THE HARD WORK OF OTHERS
