Protesters cause Cape traffic chaos

2012-03-15 22:33
Cape Town - A large crowd of protesters blockaded the N2 incoming between Somerset West and Cape Town with burning tyres on Thursday night.

A witness told News24 that cars were driving on the wrong side of the freeway to avoid the chaos.

Traffic has since been diverted.

Charlotte Powell, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town's disaster management centre, said about 100 people are taking part in the protest near Spine Road and the R300.

According to Powell, the protest is about service delivery.

The witness, who spoke to bystanders, said they were unable to say what the protesters' grievances were.

There are also reports of stoning by a mob on the N2 in the same area.
