Johannesburg - Public meetings on the revision of public holidays are expected to start at Durban's City Hall at 09:00 on Thursday.

The event was arranged by the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities.

The commission had received a number of complaints and requests concerning the fact that South Africa's public holidays only acknowledged Christianity and "discriminated unfairly" against other religions, Beeld newspaper reported.

The aim of the meetings was to collate information to determine whether the current situation was discriminatory.

The meetings would also take place in Gauteng, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State at a later stage.
