Johannesburg - Residents in the Groot Marico and Swartruggens area were warned on Monday to be on the lookout for a stray leopard, North West police said.

"Police would like the public to be cautious and if the leopard is spotted, please inform the local police or nature conservation authorities," Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said in a statement.

A police officer on his way to work saw the animal on the N4 around 05:40.

"It is believed it has escaped from a farm around the Sterkstroom area and we urge the community to be cautious.

"Do no attempt to catch the animal as it is dangerous and can kill," Ngubane warned.
