Punish RDP incompetence – Madonsela

2012-08-04 08:13

Johannesburg - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela on Friday called for the punishment of incompetent RDP housing contractors.

"Incompetent RDP housing contractors should not be allowed to operate with impunity, as this drains the much-needed public resources," she said in a statement.

There should be serious consequences for delivery of shoddy work.

"When it comes to repairing structurally defective homes, government always steps in with more resources, while the contractor lives happily ever after and continues to get more tenders."

Madonsela was in the North West as part of a countrywide investigation into complaints about houses built under the government's Reconstruction and Development Programme, and minibus taxis.

She concluded her visit to the province on Friday. Madonsela had already been to KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Free State, and would visit Limpopo next week.

On Thursday Madonsela heard serious allegations from Klerksdorp residents about officials responsible for housing. A mayoral committee member was allegedly involved in the illegal sale of houses meant for the poor.

"All these are allegations that we will have to test. On RDP matters, we will work with municipalities and the provincial government to get to the bottom of all the issues raised," she told residents.

Great idea.... start at the top...from the relevant minister right down to the bottom...

If only... Its becoming more and more difficult to believe something will actually happen. But, we're behind you Thuli. Bite them.

Wouldn't it be nice if this actually happened. Just expose who allocates funds to fix the problems caused by the contractors. This sounds like another issue of corruption. If the contractors do not build to specification, they must be charged with fraud and theft plus all the costs of the repairs !

What about the government officials who are responsible for employing and paying these useless contractors? They are just as responsible, but are never brought to task.

  • Kaven Huang - 2012-08-04 09:28

Well done for recognising the problem. Now i want to see peoples head rolling for their greed and stupidity. If that really happens then SA should give Madonsela an applaud

O how the ANC chickens are coming back to sleep, So..... Its been proven that even if your a black female with some sort of disability and related to somebody in the government and even if you have a bakkie a wheelbarrow and a graaf it STILL does not mean you can build a house... NOT Even a grade 0 RDP house!!!??? Well I never would have thought that.

the BEE contractors Thuli?- surely you can't be serious?

  • Lennon Chenga - 2012-08-04 10:54

Question, who was in Thuli's position before she took the reigns?

  • christopherstephen.barnes - 2012-08-04 10:59

So where are the relevant quality assurance data books signed off by the qualified responsible people in each case where shoddy or defective workmanship was found. Payment for services rendered can only be affected after these QA data books have been accepted by the local government official so who is he or she. That would be the responsible person to tackle first and then work all the way down to the contractor.

This is another vote-hunting ploy..I hope an Independent Law Inforcement authority (non-anc appointed one though)can take over on this one and do the punishment of incompetent BEE RDP housing contractors, mayoral committee members, provincial government & higher up cANCer cadres.

  • flysouth - 2012-08-04 11:53

Every single wheel in this world apparently has to be reinvented by the stupids of the ANC! There is no mystery over how to deal with a bad building contractor and how to get what you have paid for and there has been none since the bloody pyramids were built!

  • renier.lubbe.7 - 2012-08-04 14:02

These builders are not only incompetent they are as corrupt as those who have to oversee the projects and allocate the houses.
