'Punish those responsible for bus crash'

2010-05-06 14:19
Cape Town - Cabinet has called for those found responsible for the horrific bus accident near De Doorns in the Western Cape on Wednesday morning to "face the full might of the law".

The accident, in which 23 people, including three children, were killed, happened at about 04:45 on Wednesday on the N1 highway.

According to reports, the bus, with over 70 people aboard, left the road and rolled.

Briefing the media on Thursday, following Cabinet's fortnightly meeting the day before, government spokesperson Themba Maseko said Cabinet conveyed condolences to the families and friends of those killed and injured.

"Reports indicate that up to 50 people are still in hospital with serious injuries. Anyone found to be responsible for this accident must and will face the full might of the law.

"Law enforcement agencies must show zero tolerance and punish all those who break the law, putting the lives of our people at risk," he said.

According to reports, the driver of the bus, who survived the accident, is set to appear in court in Touwsrivier on Thursday.
