East London - A 16-year-old pupil has been arrested for taking a pistol to his school outside Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

The pupil was arrested at Jongintaba Senior Secondary School, at Mqhekezweni locality, on Wednesday after being found in possession of an unloaded pistol, said Major Ernest Sigobe.

"He was allegedly found in possession of a 7.65mm pistol, without rounds, in his schoolbag," said Sigobe.

Police were acting on a tip-off about pupils bringing weapons to school.

The teen was released into the custody of his parents and would appear soon in the Bityi Periodical Court.
