Pretoria - A 14-year-old boy was shot dead by a fellow pupil at a Pretoria secondary school on Wednesday morning, police reported.
Grade 8 pupil Precious Paul Makhohlola was shot once in the head by a 17-year-old after a long-standing dispute, said inspector Percy Morokane.
It is alleged the gunman tried to stab Makhohlola with a knife at a train station after school on Tuesday when they were on their way home.
Friends intervened and the fight was stopped, said Morokane.
The two youths attended the Marvin Harvey Educational Centre in Koedoespoort, north-east of the city.
After Tuesday's incident, the older boy allegedly sent threatening SMS messages to Makhohlola's friends.
Morokane said: "This morning, just as classes were about to start, a shot was heard at the school's reception area, where the boy's body was found."
The other youth, whose identity is known to police, ran away, taking the gun with him. A manhunt was underway, Morokane said.
The reason for the dispute between the two boys was not known.
