Johannesburg - A girl's eyelid was almost bitten-off when she tried to stop two pupils from fighting in Kagiso, in Krugersdorp, Gauteng police said on Monday.

Police spokesperson Solomon Sibiya said the 16-year-old pupil tried to stop her classmates from fighting on Thursday.

"As they manhandled each other, [the pupil]... tried to stop them. One of the two learners instead attacked the [pupil]... and bit her left eye."

He said the pupil's eyelashes and part of the eyelid that met the lashes were almost bitten off, and were attached only by a small piece of skin.

"The 18-year-old suspect fled the scene of crime, leaving her schoolbag behind."

The injured pupil was taken to hospital, where she was still receiving treatment on Monday afternoon, Sibiya said.

"The motive for the attack... is being investigated and Kagiso police are expecting to arrest the suspect soon."
