Kroonstad - Two bibles and a 9-week-old Yorkshire terrier were all that survived a house fire in Kroonstad on Thursday.

The fire destroyed the rest of the single room garden flat.

“All I thought about was my puppy, Dante,” Landi Fourie told Netwerk24 on Thursday.

Fourie, 29, lives with her fiancé Brendin Goosen, 21, in the flat behind Brendin’s parents' house in Tuinhof.

Fourie was at work when Brendin's mother, Alta, called her at about 10:30.

"She told me to go home because something was burning," she said.

When Fourie arrived at the house, she said there was just "flames and smoke" everywhere.

“When I saw it, I started crying because my dog was still inside.”

The dog, who sat trembling in her owner’s arms after she was rescued, escaped the flames by hiding under the bed.

Although Dante was saved, Fourie’s budgie was not so lucky.

Piles of clothing, a double mattress and other belongings were left strewn outside the flat door, as firefighters continued to hose down the flames.

Fourie said all her clothes had burned in the fire.

Brendin's father, Ivor, the owner of the property, said the fire was started by the television set.

"The gardener said he heard three loud sounds that sounded like gunshots. Then he saw smoke coming from under the door," he said.
