Bloemfontein – The mother and stepfather of a 10-year-old Free State girl have been found guilty of child abuse, after allegedly forcing her to compete in swimming galas and assaulting her when she complained she was tired.

Volksblad reported on Thursday that the couple admitted in a plea agreement to punishing the girl between January 2010 and November 2012 whenever she did not want to compete in swimming galas or go to swimming practice.

The child was placed in foster care.

The child's 39-year-old mother admitted to spanking the primary school pupil when she did not want to swim.

A Bloemfontein magistrate sentenced the couple to a year's correctional supervision and 192 hours of community service. A year's imprisonment or a fine of R6 000 was suspended for five years.

The 31-year-old stepfather said they admitted guilt because they wanted to see their child and not wait another six months for trial proceedings.

The couple said the child's sporting achievements did not matter any longer, and they only wanted to hold and hug her.
