Pretoria - Agang SA leader Mamphela Ramphele last week disclosed her assets, stating she was only worth R55m, despite Forbes magazine’s estimate of R500m.

According to the Sunday Independent, in 2011, Forbes magazine listed her as one of Africa’s nine richest women. The magazine estimated her wealth to be $50m (about R500m).

This week, Agang SA spokesperson Thabo Leshilo could not explain why the discrepancy wasn’t challenged by Ramphele two years ago when it was first published but Forbes Africa editor Chris Bishop said the magazine stood by its story.

According to Forbes, the former managing director of the World Bank headed Circle Capital Ventures, a BEE private equity firm, reportedly experienced returns of R1.6bn over an eight-year period.

Ramphele, who is also a former medical doctor, also served on the boards of Anglo-American, Goldields, Remgro and Mediclinic, where she reportedly benefited from a R30m deal.
