Qunu - Several police officers were huddled at the main gate of former president Nelson Mandela's house in Qunu, Eastern Cape, on Sunday afternoon.

The group of around 30 officers seemed to be holding a meeting.

At least 10 armoured military vehicles were on the property.

Police cars and an ambulance were parked in front of the house.

A large yellow crane was lifting steel rods and erecting a structure inside the property.

Nearby a large white tent had been erected.

Mourners had left flowers at the base of the property's wall.

Police had asked journalists to stay on the other side of the N2, which passes the home.

Construction workers were laying tar on the N2 between Mthatha and Qunu. The road has been closed off for a few kilometres before and after Mandela's house.

Qunu is about 30km from Mthatha.
