Johannesburg - A 28-year-old man was convicted of drunken driving and driving without a driver's licence by the Mount Ayliff Magistrate's Court, Arrive Alive said on Thursday.
Spokesperson Tshepo Mashaya said Khangelani Baneka was sentenced to one year in jail with an option of a R10 000 fine for drunken driving.
He was also sentenced to a three months or R1 000 for driving without a driver's licence.
Baneka was arrested at a roadblock on the N2 between Kokstad and Mount Ayliff over the Easter weekend.
"He was drunk and driving without a driver's licence when he was arrested at the roadblock.
"He is still in jail as he is struggling to come up with the money," said Mashaya.
The vehicle he was driving was released to the owner, but police will make an application for the car to be legally attached, Mashaya said.
