Bloemfontein - A Free State Department of Health employee was arrested after medicine worth more than R17 000 was allegedly found in her possession in Thabong near Welkom.

The medicine, which included ARV's, TB medication and medicine for newborn babies, was allegedly found in her house.

Health MEC spokesperson Tebogo Oepeng said the medicine was discovered by a construction worker when he was fixing the pharmaceutical assistant’s house.

He reported it to the police.

The police alerted the provincial department and the woman was arrested immediately.

She has also since been suspended.

The 56-year-old pharmaceutical assistant was employed at the Bophelong Clinic in Welkom. She will appear in the Welkom Magistrate's Court on July 28.

Health Department HOD Dr David Motau assured the community that intensive internal investigations are forthcoming and appealed to members of the community to report similar incidents.
