Johannesburg - A Malawian man appeared in the Musina Magistrate's Court on Friday for allegedly trying to smuggle heroin tablets worth about R19m into South Africa, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

Makunkha Kennedy Manda, aged 45, was formally charged with possession of drugs and the matter was postponed to 7 January for further investigations, the NPA's advocate Edward Pesulo said.

He was arrested at the Beit Bridge border post, near Musina, last Friday. Manda, the driver of a South African luxury bus service, was found in possession of heroin tablets worth around R19m, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said at the time.

"The operation began when [police] and customs officials stopped the bus from Malawi, and a search by officials as well as a sniffer dog led to the discovery of a packet with a large amount of tablets in possession of the driver."
