R30 000 fines shock for drivers

Johannesburg - Fines totalling more than R30 000 were issued to motorists for speeding and other offences in Ekurhuleni on Sunday.
Spokesperson Jimmy Maboko said all sections of the Ekurhuleni metro police department went out on Sunday morning on a special operation.
The operation concentrated on catching speedsters, a roadblock checking for vehicle defects and outstanding warrants.
Fines totalling R15 800 were given to 77 people at the roadblock.
Fines totalling R15 300 were issued to 64 speedsters, with one motorist receiving a R1 000 fine for travelling at 159km/h in a 100km/h zone.
Nine people were arrested for outstanding fines.
