Johannesburg - Counterfeit Bafana-Bafana merchandise worth around R30m has been seized at the OR Tambo International airport in the past three months, said the SA Revenue Services (SARS) Customs on Saturday.

Consignments of fake Bafana-Bafana T-shirts, tracksuits, caps and other merchandise relating to the 2010 soccer World Cup were being brought into the country from Asian countries by those hoping to cash in on the World Cup, said spokesperson Sibabalwenathi Mfabe.

"As we get closer to the World Cup people will try to bring in more counterfeit stuff particularly now that we have soccer Friday [a designated day for fans to wear their soccer jerseys] people are taking advantage of fans who cannot afford original jerseys," Mfabe said.

He said customs officials have intensified their operations and roped in more officers to curb increasing criminal activities in the build up to the World Cup.
