R350m Cape Town security deal probed

2012-03-18 16:00

Johannesburg - A security tender worth R350m is under scrutiny in the DA-led city of Cape Town, the Sunday Times reported.

The tender went out in March last year and was awarded in October to 22 companies.

Four separate lists of successful bidders were issued before the tender was cancelled this year after unsuccessful bidders complained to the council, the weekly reported.

At least one successful bidder was not registered with the private security industry regulator, according to the paper. In addition, two of the successful companies featured members from the same family.

Mgebe Security Services, an unsuccessful bidder, alleged that one successful company used a church building as its company address, and that only four of the 22 successful companies were black-owned.

The tender involved 22 contracts for guarding more than 1 000 sites, including government buildings, clinics, libraries and community halls.

Deputy Mayor Ian Neilson confirmed to the paper he was aware of difficulties with the contract. He said he was awaiting feedback on the reasons for the cancellation of the tender.

Now that corruption is done by the DA, it's suddenly right? Goes to show how some people will never change in this country. I will always vote for the ANC no matter what. At least I got to study what I want and work as a professional in a country where black people were only seen as good enough to work as mere labourers.

      Paul - 2012-03-18 16:31

If you read the article, you would realize that the tender was not awarded and is now being investigated.

      Vic - 2012-03-18 16:44

'I will always vote for the ANC, no matter what!' Like sheep? No wonder they have carte blanche to do as they please.

      Blane - 2012-03-18 16:48

      Baaaa baaaaaa

      Simnikiwe - 2012-03-18 16:49

Vic, its her constitutional right to vote for whichever party she wants to vote for.

      Jennifer - 2012-03-18 16:57

Corruption is never ok. They are investigating and if there were corrupt dealings, we will see if the DA gets their act together and fires the corrupt people as well as getting the money back or if they try to bamboozle it all away, like the ANC tends to do. however, as it stands, this is an investigation not proven fact. The ANC on the other hand has taken the billions and billions of rands that should have been used to build houses, feed people, provide medical help, build and repair infrastucture, help small businesses and protect the people... instead they drank Champagne, thinking of you as it passed their lips. It is time for change.

      Vic - 2012-03-18 16:59

Simnikiwe, on your high horse again! Nobody disputes her constitutional right to vote for whom she likes, but it's 'no matter what' that is of concern. Look at Zimbabwe! I rest my case!

      Simnikiwe - 2012-03-18 17:07

Vic, Im on my chair, just because my fellow Africans at Zimbabwe were unfortunate to have their economy collapse, don't assume we gonna let our enonomy die too. There are a lot of competent graduates, like my self ( in 2 years time), who have the ability to lead this country to prosperity.

      Piet - 2012-03-18 17:20

hehehe the Da steals millions and the ANC cadres billions yet you will vote for them....you have to pick the lesser of the two evils!

      Piet - 2012-03-18 17:23

simnikiwe, a degree means nothing when obtained in South Africa any longer. Bee/aa touched those institutions. This holds especially true for engineering degrees!

      Simnikiwe - 2012-03-18 17:25

Lol Piet I like your comment, both parties are corrupt. but bigger is always better. I'll stick with the one that steals more, ANC seems to have mastered the art of stealing...am goin with the champ...ANC

      Simnikiwe - 2012-03-18 17:28

Piet, a SA degree might be useless in other countries, but am not planning on leaving the country after I graduate. I wanna work here.

      Vic - 2012-03-18 17:45

Simnikiwe, sure there are a few competent blacks, capable of running the Country, but they are not that stupid to be in government. They're too busy making money elsewhere, and not stealing from the taxpayers.

      Piet - 2012-03-18 17:47

Good luck then if you cannot build any infrastructure. And about the whites leaving, if we could this country would have been done years ago.g

      Sinudeity - 2012-03-18 17:51

Simnikiwe - "There are a lot of competent graduates, like my self ( in 2 years time), who have the ability to lead this country to prosperity." Just a pity that none of these competent graduates are in the ANC.

      Simthandile Mpondo - 2012-03-18 17:55

      LOL @ Simnikiwe. Tell them

      Simnikiwe - 2012-03-18 18:05

Piet, Vic & Sinudeity...not all of us are obssesed with money and power. Some of us actually want to give back to Mzansi. Some of us want to eradicate poverty, create job opportunities, make townships safer and improve the standard of education. Im quite sure there are a lot of people out there who share the same vision as me. People who want to make Mzansi a better place to live in, not because they want money or power, simply because, they love Mzansi.

      Marie - 2012-03-18 18:10

Simnikiwe, you state that you have the ability to lead our beloved country to prosperity. I'm no expert on leadership, but I believe that good leadership qualities include integrity, wisdom, humility, being of exemplary character, trustworthy to lead others, committed to excellence, passionate, dedication to serving others, putting other people above yourself. I have no doubt that you agree.

      Simnikiwe - 2012-03-18 18:49

Marie, I agree sweety. I have a lot to learn, but at the moment, there are a lot of young guys out there who posses all the traits needed to be a good leader. This is not about me being a leader, this is about Mzansi being led to prosperity. It doesn't matter who does it, what matters is that its done. If no one will step up to the plate an take this responsibility, Im more than happy to take it.

      Hugo - 2012-03-18 18:51

      Simnikiwe-count me in

      Piet - 2012-03-18 19:45

you need money and power, that is where your taxes and employers come from. You just do not get it though, you have to chase power and money. As soon as you do you work harder and harder. You want to better this country and if i read correctly not by hard work. The mentality is different, what you fail to understand is that white afrikaners had to work hard for the last 150 years. Harder than the rest because we had much more to lose. Now when we go on tantrums regarding this government you label us as racists. We are used to better, we strive to be better, than the person next to you. That is the white afrikaner way. So stop wishing me away, cause we will still be here giving you are hard time for better delivery. And you said it, you are content with a below average degree.....

      Sinudeity - 2012-03-18 19:52

Simnikiwe - "not all of us are obssesed with money and power." Thats one of the qualifications needed to be an ANC leader. Obsession with money and power.

      Simnikiwe - 2012-03-18 20:06

Piet, of course hard work is important, to some people. I do things my way, the Afrocentric way. I work smart, not hard. I promote synergy, I believe two heads are always better than one. Im a collectivist, I prefer to work in teams, not because Im lazy or anything, but simply because, a team yields better results than an individual effort.

      Piet - 2012-03-18 20:11

and that is why africa fail. Afrocentric? i am not going to say anything more, you have answered yourself on why africa is at the bottom of the foodchain.

      Piet - 2012-03-18 20:14

And that is what happenned with the ANC the team failed? So who is to blame then?nobody? Cause you are not putting blame on that team...you will still vote for them!

      Simnikiwe - 2012-03-18 20:26

Piet, that "team" just needs new fresh ideas that would work today, not tried and tired Apartheid ideas. It just needs, Swagg...

      Mantsho - 2012-03-18 21:24

A lots of corruption in SA is being done by the ANC, you dont always hear about corruption from DA, go back and read the article again. DA is a threat to you so please dont tell us nothing.

      Juan - 2012-03-19 01:05

@Simnikiwe judged by the immaturity and contradictions in your comments, I would rather see a 5 year old toddler leading the country before you.

      Piet - 2012-03-19 08:43

They are reverting back to ot tried and tired Apartheid ideas.....

      flysouth - 2012-03-19 13:22

Simthandile Mpondo - it is obvious that when reading you are not comprehending! One would think that a 'professional' would at least be able to read and understand what the words mean! The tender was cancelled as a result of the irregularities mentioned, which were picked up by the DA and acted upon. They did the correct thing and cancelled the entire deal until it can be properly tendered for in a correct manner! That is how government should act - not like the ANC which happily awards tenders to it's buddies even without any tender process and often where there are massive and blatant iregularities and conflicts of interest!

  • victor.kaumba - 2012-03-18 16:26

am sure there will be contrasting comments from whites and blacks here. Corruption has no color, I guess.

      Kolobe - 2012-03-18 20:37

but south african whites cannot be corrupt, they only do holy stuff like inventing apartheid

      Riaan - 2012-03-18 22:44

Now they just need to invent a antidote for a virus called Kolobe!

      Art - 2012-03-19 08:22

I agree Victor... but ACCOUNTABILITY is synonamous with the D.A... Should the findings produce PROOF there are corrupt activities... you WILL SEE HEADS ROLL!!!! Mrs Zille runs a tight ship... but with every box of Apples... you WILL find one or two bad ones!

  • Hedzer - 2012-03-18 16:39

Mgebe Security Services, an unsuccessful bidder, alleged that only four of the 22 successful companies were black-owned. Why must they be black-owned . You take the one that is the best and no that the work will be done. The tender was cancelled .

      curtiswelliem - 2012-03-19 17:49

Hedzer, please don't be a fool> On top of the fact that the DA is racist, it is the worst corrupt party in this country. The ANC is corrupt but it tries to carter for the majority of the people, unlike the DA which only look at White interest. Who said other Black Security companies were not the best. You still dozing from your apartheid diseas. mcm.

  • pieter0827006294 - 2012-03-18 17:02

I agree with Victor. Money, and therefore corruption, has no color. This is exactly why I couldn't care who has the power. Whoever has the power of the people's vote will abuse it for their own benefit. Opposing parties will try and expose it to damage the reputation of the corrupt but when given the chance, they themselves become corrupt. Look at apartheid government and now ANC. Do not expect that this will end soon. Black and white are being robbed of our tax monies and poorest of the poor will go hungry by the day. Fact is - Politicians cannot handle the responsibilities they are expected to carry.

      phathuchicos - 2012-03-18 17:31

White people are like republicans of USA they always complain about democrats mess while they are not cleaning their houses...one thing they share is that they are both not running the country...lmao.

      phathuchicos - 2012-03-18 17:13

And finally news24 now reports DA's dirty secrets...

      Simnikiwe - 2012-03-18 17:17

Malema is out of the picture now, they have no choice but to dish these secrets. Otherwise they will have no readers if they don't do so...

      Blane - 2012-03-19 04:55

@simnikiwe- I have 4 words for you - Go forth and multiply

  • abner.malema - 2012-03-18 17:23

Trevor you are not black. I'm working at a private company every year we train white people after a year they are given senior position cause they have experience in SA black people don't have experience only white.

      Piet - 2012-03-18 19:54

it is simple abner, we deliver!

How DA leads th Western Cape is a precursor of how they will lead the country. They will neglect economic development of Blacks in favour of Whites just as they plan to forbid Blacks in the Western Cape from owning liquor licences, only Whites should own licences.

      phathuchicos - 2012-03-18 20:50

      spot on...

      phathuchicos - 2012-03-18 20:52

      Mantsho - 2012-03-18 21:19

You go back and read the Article again, please.

      Riaan - 2012-03-18 22:48

Mantsho You assume these two semi-illiterate fools can read.

      Juan - 2012-03-19 01:18

The city has been lead rather well, and black people in Cape Town are generally much better off than in the rest of the country, because service delivery works.

  • Harold - 2012-03-18 18:01

So being black is the criteria.I thought it was supposed to be previously disadvantaged. Mgebe security Services you have obviously lost the tender because you did not try hard enough. Are you not concerned that 22 other companies are better than you because they did not try to get a tender just because they are black. You are a pathetic little crybaby.

      Mashaba Goboza - 2012-03-18 19:03

@Harold who are previously disadvanated? those companies were awarded tenders corruptly if u read the story hence investigated!

      Anton Visser - 2012-03-19 11:37

Good day, me company was also involved in the security tender process. The awarding of the tendr was irregular to say the least. How can a company that is registered two days before the closing date of the tender be awarded the tender. Tender called for companies with at least five years experience.

  • TawwaTienie - 2012-03-18 19:35

What is the difference between the DA and the ANC !!!!!!! No difference regarding tender corruption Look at the other municipality in Gauteng too ... and they also want to make a difference, what difference? This kind of corruption, how many jobs can be created of this or service houses to the supporters?

  • RealNikka - 2012-03-18 21:56

When DA is doing Corruption , white people are quick to defend and justify. When ANC is doing corruption, Black people are quick to defend and Justify. News 24 commentators are soo predictable , it is not even funny.I didnt even bother to read the comments Yet these people say they want what is best for the country.

  • Pixie86 - 2012-03-19 08:23

oh the hypocrisy! If it had been the anc all white commentators would have been up in arms, mentioning juju and zuma. Now that it's the da they're all defensive! Politicians are all liars, black or white. Learn to live with it. If you seriously think the DA is made of saints you need to take off your rose tinted glasses! Idiots

      richard.hipkin - 2012-03-19 13:33

Yup.... And now you know why I hate hypocrites, they are here all day and everyday..

  • Matthew - 2012-03-19 08:48

So because 4 of the 22 is only black owned, now its a problem, because they're friends couldnt tag alone?! HOW Fotsak! so tired of hearing that Juju mentaLity.really go cry in your room, not in the papers.people need to get over that stupid way of thinking.get over it,and get over yourself. you wernt the right choice for the deal.someone better was choose. so now what? oh yes thats right,"its unfair" "only 4 of the 22 are black owned" and what the hell does that matter with anything? stop playing that stupid bloody unfair/race card nonsense

  • curtiswelliem - 2012-03-19 17:58

Some people never cease to amaze me. Now that the DA has been exposed of its corrupt dealings, There are all sorts of excuses popping up from certain corners of the society, just like those sect of the society defended the apartheid. Some white people will never change. Western Cape is said to be the best run Province, for who!!. As far as am concerned Blacks are now even more subjected to racism, cruel conditions than they were under the ANC. At least the ANC gives everyone I chance, Like Simthandile said, 'I got a chance to study my choice of degree and live the life I want, live where I want, and get the job that I want. Than vote for DA, that sees blacks as labourous. Viva ANC, this country is far much better than what it was under the so called white ruled. Down with Apatheid and down With People with the apartheid mentality!!!

  • curtiswelliem - 2012-03-19 17:58

Corrupt DA period, whites do not try to justify the unjustifiable

  • Firoz Jeewa - 2012-03-19 21:03

The comments on this story are turning into black vs white, which I think is wrong. The fact is that, black or white, the DA cannot be trusted!
