Durban - A gang of robbers escaped with R50 000 in cash after allegedly robbing a man in the La Lucia Mall parking lot in Durban on Wednesday.

According to a statement issued by the mall, the robbery was caught on their close circuit television (CCTV) systems and played out in mere seconds.

However, they noted the footage “does not confirm whether or not an armed robbery actually took place”.

“On Wednesday it was alleged an armed robbery occurred at 11:20 in the La Lucia Mall underground parking area.

"CCTV footage shows four males drove into the car park in a bronze Peugeot sedan shortly after the alleged victim from Hammarsdale had driven into the same car park,” the statement read.

“They parked their vehicle immediately next to his. It further shows two men exiting the Peugeot and approaching and talking to the victim on both the passenger and driver sides of his vehicle.

"It is alleged the suspects held [up] the man and stole a bag containing a large sum of money from the back seat of his car, as well as the victim’s cellphone and car keys, and fled.”

La Lucia Mall centre manager Vanessa Blevins said the CCTV footage did not confirm whether or not an armed robbery actually took place.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Raymond Deokoran confirmed the victim had reported R50 000 in cash was in his stolen bag.
