RDP housing agents a scam - dept

Johannesburg - Gauteng's housing department warned Katlehong residents on Monday about people posing as department agents promising houses for a special fee.

"We would like to warn the residents to be wary when people demand money from them. RDP houses are allocated freely to qualifying beneficiaries," said Housing MEC Ntombi Mekgwe in a statement.

For a R2 000 and a R120 key fee, the scam artists were promising people in Tshongweni, Katlehong houses.

The department said the scammers told residents to go to the department of housing on 26 April where they would be allocated houses and receive their keys.

Mekgwe distanced her department from the scam and said the allocation of houses was done by employees and only when the houses had been completed.

"We will never use agents to allocate houses," Mekgwe said.

They said the right channels would be used to inform people of available houses. The matter would be taken to the Hawks.

"I would like to see these people arrested and face the law for trying to rob the desperate and vulnerable people in our communities," Mekgwe said.
