2014-12-12 08:37

The ANC's close relationship with China was blamed earlier this year for the Dalai Lama's visa refusal to South Africa. Political economist Daniel Silke explains that SA-China links will certainly dictate SA's foreign policy in the coming year.WATCH

Johannesburg - Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday led a South African delegation to China, his office said.

Ramaphosa was with Ministers Lynne Brown, Blade Nzimande and Deputy Ministers Thembi Majola, Mzwandile Masina, Mcebisi Jonas, senior government officials, business leaders and state-owned enterprise executives.

The visit was centred on South Africa's economic and trade relations with China and would also explore how state-owned enterprises could be utilised to promote economic growth while addressing challenges of poverty and unemployment, said Ramaphosa's spokesperson, Ronnie Mamoepa.

"On Tuesday... Ramaphosa is expected to hold bilateral political and economic discussions with Vice President Li Yuanchao, followed by a meeting with Li Qiang the Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China ahead of interacting with the leadership of the Chinese Academy of Governance and address a banquet in his honour later the evening," said Mamoepa.

Ramaphosa and Yuanchao would also discuss South Africa's co-hosting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which will be held later this year in South Africa.

The visit was to end on Friday.
