Rape-accused nurse appears in court

Johannesburg - A Free State male nurse accused of raping a terminally ill cancer patient in a Bloemfontein hospital last year appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

"The case was postponed to May 30 for further investigation," police spokesperson Sergeant Mamello Macheoane said.

The 33-year-old nurse appeared for a trial date to be set in the high court.

He was arrested after a 50-year-old woman cancer patient alleged she was raped during a night shift at the National Hospital.

The woman's husband told police the attack happened on October 15.

The patient, who has since died, could not identify a woman nurse who she said held her down while the male nurse raped her.

The man is out on bail.

I'm shocked. Is there no more humanity in South Africa. A dying woman rape by people who is suppose to be caring for her. Is that what we really want for ourselves or our love ones? Please don't make a political case out of this outrage. We are human and as humans we have feelings. This rapist is out on bail. There was scientific evidence which is proved of his guild. But he is out on bail. Shame on all South Africans who allowed this to happen.

Were DNA tests carried out, which would have proved whether or not rape had in fact happened. Swabs should have been taken immediately. But I expect that would be asking too much of hospital staff or the police involved.
