Johannesburg - An 8-year-old Gingindlovu girl, whose eye was gouged out when she was raped, has a new artificial eye, the Witness newspaper reported on Friday.

“She didn't want to take the eye out again, and wanted to return to school as early as tomorrow,” said Rita Khuzwayo, a preacher who had taken pity on her.

The final fitting of the eye was done on Thursday. The eye was made because she was teased at the new school she attends because her previous artificial eye was too small for her socket.

She was taken to the Durban University of Technology where Peter Furber, a lecturer in dental technology, made a more precise-fitting artificial eye.

In April, she was dragged into a sugarcane field, raped, and her left eye gouged out. A 15-year-old boy was arrested for the crime. The case against him is pending in the Mtunzini Magistrate's Court.
