Johannesburg - A man convicted of raping a former school friend was given two life sentences by the Phuthaditjhaba Regional Court on Thursday, Free State police said.
Seven others were acquitted.
Phoesa Obed Mokoena was found guilty on two counts of rape, one of aggravated robbery and one of kidnapping, said Sergeant Mmako Mophiring.
He was sentenced to a further 15 years in jail for robbery and five years for kidnapping.
On 25 August 2007, his 17-year-old school friend was walking in Phuthaditjhaba with her boyfriend when eight men accosted them.
The gang assaulted the boyfriend, raped her, and took her cellphone and money.
Mophiring said DNA evidence linked Mokoena to the crime.
