Cape Town - Former Naval officer Tsediso Letsoenya was on Monday found guilty in the Cape High Court on 28 charges of rape.
In addition to the rape charges, he was also found guilty on 28 counts of indecent assault, two of attempted rape, eight of aggravated armed robbery and two of common assault and two of crimen injuria.
As part of the sentencing procedures, prosecutor Christenus van der Vijver is to launch an application on Tuesday before Judge Abie Motala and two assessors to have Letsoenya referred to Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital.
The purpose of the application is for a panel of psychiatrists to determine whether Letsoenya is a danger to society.
If Tuesday's application is granted, and Letsoenya is in fact assessed to be a danger to society, he is likely to be declared a dangerous criminal.
If declared a dangerous criminal, he will be jailed for an indefinite period, longer than life imprisonment, and may not be released without the consent of the court.
